Alpine is about twelve minutes from our Lehi office, up through Highland. It’s also the one city in the county where the typical door isn’t a builder grade steel door: Alpine’s larger lots and custom homes mean wider, taller, heavier, and often insulated or carriage style doors, and the hardware behind them is sized to match. We carry the springs for those, and same day service is realistic for most calls that come in before early afternoon.
We repair springs, cables, rollers, and openers on every brand, replace single panels matched to the door, and install new doors when a repair no longer makes sense. The quote comes before the work.
Alpine was built mostly between the 1980s and the 2010s on half acre and larger lots, and its garages reflect that: three- and four car garages, 9- and 10 foot openings, insulated doors, wood and wood look carriage doors, and doors with oversized bays for trailers and boats.
Weight is the whole story. An insulated 18 foot door can weigh twice what a builder grade door does, and it needs springs wound for that weight. The most common thing we find on an Alpine call is a previous repair that put standard springs on a heavy door: the door feels heavy, the opener strains and eventually burns out, and the springs fail early. Correct sizing fixes all three. We weigh the door before we spec the spring.
Openers. Heavy doors need openers rated for them, and many Alpine homes are running an original half horsepower chain drive on a door that should have a 3/4 or 1 horsepower belt or jackshaft unit. When the door is balanced correctly the opener doesn’t have to be a monster, but it does have to be right.
Wind and snow. Alpine sits high on the bench under Box Elder Peak, and the wind coming off the mountain is enough to bow wide doors that aren’t braced. Wide doors get struts as a rule. Snow loads against the bottom of the door also chew through bottom seals faster than in the valley, and a cold, dry garage is where a worn seal gets noticed first.
Matching, not replacing. On a custom carriage door a single damaged section is usually replaceable through the manufacturer. We’ll find out before you commit to a whole new door.
