Provo is the oldest big city in the county and it has the widest range of garage doors we work on anywhere: 1950s single car garages a few blocks from BYU, 1970s split levels on the Grandview and Edgemont benches, and new construction along the river on the west side. Most of Utah County was built after 1990. Most of Provo wasn’t, and that changes what a garage door call looks like here.
The old grid: Joaquin, Franklin, Maeser, and the blocks around downtown. These homes date from the 1920s through the 1950s. Many have a detached single car garage with an opening narrower than a modern door, a wood door that’s been painted a dozen times, and an opener someone added in the 1990s to a door that was never balanced for one. A large share are rentals, which means the door has had years of hard use and no maintenance. The honest call here is often a correctly sized new door rather than another spring on a door that’s rotting at the bottom.
The benches: Grandview, Edgemont, Indian Hills, Oak Hills (1960s, 1980s). Split levels and ramblers with attached two car garages, usually on their second or third spring set, with openers that predate battery backup and safety sensors that meet current code. Oak Hills and the upper east bench also sit close enough to Provo and Rock canyons to take canyon wind, and doors up there that flex in a storm need struts.
West Provo and the River Bottoms (2000s onward). Newer subdivisions between Geneva Road and the lake, with builder grade doors and standard cycle springs now reaching the seven to ten year failure window. Same pattern as the rest of the county: when one house on the street breaks a spring, the neighbors follow.
