Murray’s median home was built in 1978, and more than half of its houses date from the 1960s through the 1980s. That is the single biggest factor in the calls we run here: a lot of doors that have outlived their original hardware all at once.
The older core. The homes near State Street and the original town are the oldest in the city, often with detached or single car garages and doors that predate openers. Wall mount openers and sectional doors sized to the opening fix most of the problems we see.
1960s and 1970s ramblers and split levels. The biggest share of the city. Many doors still run extension springs along the tracks, sometimes without the safety cables that keep a broken spring from whipping loose. Tracks are pulled from old jambs, and rollers are worn flat. We usually recommend a system overhaul with a torsion conversion, which costs much less than a new door and fixes the noise and the balance together.
1980s homes. These doors are on their third or fourth spring set, and many openers are old enough to have no battery backup and weak safety sensors. An opener replacement often makes more sense than another repair.
Newer infill and townhomes. Newer construction around the city center brings HOA color and style rules. We match single panels so a dent doesn’t mean a new door.

Often it’s worn rollers and dry hinges, which a tune up fixes. But grinding or a door that jerks can mean a worn spring or a bent track. We’ll tell you which.
If your extension springs are due, usually yes. Torsion springs last longer, balance better, and don’t whip loose when they break. We’ll quote both.
